Campus Legends is spearheading the growth of esports as a viable career path for young, aspiring esports student-athletes.
29 April 2019, Singapore — Singapore’s Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) is launching Campus Legends, an esports league for Singapore’s Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), which include the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities. Supported by the National Youth Council (NYC) and part of the YOUTHx celebrations, Campus Legends aims to support aspiring esports players, as well as students who seek to develop a career in the esports industry, in their personal and professional development by providing various opportunities to compete, learn and inculcate values of sportsmanship, discipline, resilience and teamwork.
With OMEN by HP as the title sponsor of Campus Legends and yup.gg as a main sponsor, the league also boasts official partners like Professional Solutions Company (PSAP), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific, Garena and Yahoo. Campus Legends also provides a platform for emerging esports talents, especially those coming through SCOGA’s esports academy education efforts, to showcase their skills. This platform also allows for esports organisations to discover and develop the next generation of professionals in the games and esports industry. The holistic programming of Campus Legends represents SCOGA’s continued commitment to support the education and development of young gaming talents, help develop industry-ready talents, and grow viable and rewarding careers in esports.
Campus Legends will begin with intra-IHL qualifying rounds to be held at a designated, off-campus venue, where student teams will compete to represent their respective IHLs in a double-elimination competition. The qualified representatives from each IHL will compete in a group stage for a place in the grand finals, which will take place at the Singapore Sports Hub from 3 to 4 August 2019 in conjunction with National Youth Council’s YOUTHx celebrations. All matches will occur on weekends and outside of school examination periods.
The total prize pool of S$10,000 will be split among the two Campus Legends game titles – League of Legends and FIFA19. In League of Legends, the champion team will walk away with S$3,500, while the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will win S$2,000 and S$1,500 respectively. In FIFA19, the champion team will receive S$1,500, while the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will win S$1,000 and S$500 respectively. Reinforcing the importance of holistic development and education to esports athletes and professionals, half of the cash prize will be awarded in the form of scholarships.
During the course of Campus Legends, IHL students and members of the public will get to participate in a wide range of workshops and masterclasses touching on various aspects of esports, such as broadcasting and production in esports, marshalling and officiating esports events, improving gaming performance through sports science, and game commentary. In addition, Campus Legends will be collaborating with local esports sim racing league, Legion of Racers, to introduce pathways from esports to career opportunities in the motorsports industry.

Singapore’s Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) was founded in 2008 by a group of enthusiastic gamers and leaders who wanted to make a difference for esports in Singapore. SCOGA aims to elevate esports by educating young people, nurturing online communities and creating job opportunities. SCOGA’s vision for the Esports Academy involves creating a centre of excellence around esports and youth leadership. In 2018, more than 100,000 participants from 13 countries have turned up for SCOGA events live in person with more than 6.5 million unique online viewers in the past year alone. These events included Asian Games Esports Singapore Qualifiers, Campus Game Fest, Asian Football Gaming Championship Grand Finals, Garena AOV Cup, and the Singapore Qualifiers for Alisports’ World Electronic Sports Games. Over the past 10 years, more than a million have participated in SCOGA’s events live in person and close to a thousand have now gone through the doors of our Esports Academy in both part time and full-time programmes.
